Biography
My name is Sarah Flores and I have been teaching for CCSD for eleven years. I started teaching at Robert Lunt Elementary School as a fourth grade teacher. After two years at Robert Lunt I moved to Wing and Lilly Fong Elementary School, and have been here ever since. I have taught kindergarten, third, fourth, and fifth grade.
This year I am a learning strategist at Wing and Lilly Fong Elementary. This is my first year in this position. I actually started the 2014-2015 school year as a kindergarten teacher. In October, my principal offered the strategist job to me. I was thrilled that she thought of me, but very sad to leave my kindergartners. This year I primarily worked with struggling readers every day in small groups. I did have one group of enrichment second graders that I met with four days a week. When I needed to try out new tools or techniques from these courses I primarily had my fifth grade struggling readers or my third grade struggling readers test them out. I was fortunate that for the first half of the year I pulled my reading groups in the computer lab, so we had easy access to technology.
Before these classes I had only heard of blended learning once. One of my colleagues moved to a blended learning elementary school. I didn't know what that meant. One day I saw a flyer for the blended learning certificate program and I decided it looked interesting. As I was taking these courses I started to implement some of the strategies and tools I was learning about. I did not have a blended learning classroom, but I did make more groups more technology rich. It is a step in the right direction.
I am really glad that I took a chance and took these classes. My job next year is still a learning strategist, but I am going to be working with fourth and fifth grade teachers to help them use more technology in their classrooms. We will be using Edmodo and Google Apps throughout the year. Hopefully in the future we can attempt a blended learning model. I would not have this job next year if I had not taken these classes.
